First Class of 4 Beginning Decorator Class

Yeah!  Today was the first day of the beginning decorating class.  Valeta is a great instructor.  I like how she said, "Some people say 'oh, I will practice at home' - and I tell them 'oh no.'  You're going to practice here and you're going to get it."  She walks around the room and has helpful suggestions on things to do and how to hold the bag.  She even worked with a left handed student, when the instructions are right handed based.

We started with the practice board with stars and rosettes, using tip 21, holding the bag straight up and down.  I actually like making the rosettes larger.

On the back of this practice sheet, we practiced lines using the same tip 21, but at a 3 o'clock position.  Valeta said to test out pressure with the lines - light, medium and hard.  I started having fun with it, going light and then hard pressure and it created cool ruffles.  Valeta saw that I was just having fun with the pressure and she showed me how to make a clown.  Go around and high to make the body.  Then go straight out and build for the legs and feet.  Then go out from the body and around for the hands.  Then a head on top.  And you can buy a clown hat pick for the top.  How adorable would that be!

The clown body on the left is the one that Valeta did and my attempt is on the right.

That's one thing I really like about Valeta - she will show the basics, then add to it, that is outside of the course on creative ideas!  It opens the horizon of what all can be done with icing decorating.  She makes it fun.

Next we used tip 1M.  I have seen this tip before and this large tip seemed a little intimidating.  But HOW COOL - it makes a rosette super fast - but uses a LOT of icing too.  Easy to make though and would definitely do this again for cupcakes!

Also, Valeta said to use Dawn to clean everything. Fill up the sink with water and dawn to clean - otherwise the icing will clog up the drains.
