Troll Duty

As a blogger, have you ever deleted a comment made by another person on your blog.. or deleted a comment that you left on another blog?

I was pondering this after I recently deleted a comment by another person on my blog. The reason for the deletion was a negative comment made by an anon. person towards another friend - it was an uncalled for attack. First, if you're going to be nasty on someone else's blog, have the courage to own it and state who you are. Secondly, don't piss in someone else's pond. If you have a gripe, get it off of my site and take it to your own blog. And Third ~ eh, no third, I figure those two are sufficient.

I don't mind different opinions. But ugly comments with the intentions of attacking, that's a hint for the delete button.

As for deleting a comment I've made on another blog - nope, never have. If I don't want it said, I shouldn't write it the first time, is how I figure it. I have seen a blogger delete a duplicate post and that makes sense. Not long ago, a blogger who I don't know IRL but is somehow "out there IRL" (difficult to explain, but the person is connected to a past, but not through me)... anyway, this blogger posted a comment. Which I didn't mind in the least and I even sent an email to the blogger and seemed all was well. The blogger then deleted the comment and unfriended me on FB. No biggie, no feelings hurt. Never met the person IRL and it's for the best, considering the person was just an internet associate.

Both situations got me thinking though. I've been fortunate not to have too many nastiness on my blog and for that, I'm grateful. What about ya'll ~ have you ever had to deal with a troll?

I've been lucky so far not to run into any blogging trolls. I do know that some of my blogging buddies have had to change their blog names in order to avoid a jerk's harassment. It's terrible that there are people out there who abuse this forum.

ive never had to delete a comment(other than obvious spam garbage). i dont want to delete comments but if someone was being malicious and hateful, i would do what i had to do.

and i agree with you, i love differing opinions, especially if it starts an interesting discussion within the comments, but no nastiness allowed. and the same rules apply to myself when commenting elsewhere. politeness counts.

Hmmm. As a new blogger I havent had to deal with that. I have follwed bloggers that have received negative comments, sometimes really nasty and almost always anonymously! One time a blogger got a really mean, cutting comment that wasnt anonymous, she blogged about it and a bunch of her readers slammed the commenter with mean comments!

No personal attacks yet, some far in the past spam (i.e. spam left on posts more than 8 months old once or twice), but nothing meriting deletion.

The only time I have deleted a comment of my own is when a flaky keyboard double-posted one.

I always regard a blog as a bit like holding public office - people and the press may say anything they want about you, but the only way it hurts is if you give it credence. That has worked for me.

OH boy do I know trolls. But I write about politics and my opinions. I even locked my blog at one point. The troll is probably still copying all my stuff and using it for their blog and dedicating that I hate blog to me still. What can you do? It's like the 5th grade playground. Our parents lied to us about when we grow up...and in the real world. It doesn't exist. Most never grow up. So sad. Ignore.

I've deleted two, one was responding to a comment from a fellow blogger. It seems this person was a stalker. I deleted her comment simply because I didn't want to be used and get in the middle of their disagreement. The second was, a fellow blogger made a comment just to advertise a product. She hadn't ever before been to my blog, to me it was sorta like spam!
That's horrible...I'm so sorry to hear it...you are such a wonderful person...you, of all people, shouldn't have to deal with that!!! Hope that's the first and last time that ever happens to you...Love you! Janine XO

No, thank goodness! Several weeks after a few posts, a comment has come through, either advertising or strange phrases that I've deleted. I can't imagine anyone leaving a negative comment, especially on YOUR blog, Aleta!!

I've deleted a comment once but I feel confident in saying that that was innocent. I had misspelled the name of the daughter of the blogger. So I checked how to spell it and re-posted my comment with the correct spelling.... ;)

On my blog, not yet, but on Facebook often. Sometimes, discussions go totally off track, and then they get personal, and you know you are much better off if they happen in some place other than one owned by you.
I've done a few wrong spelling related deletions on my own comments!

No one's ever been nasty on my blog, though, which is good, since I'd probably delete my whole blog and go live in a cave I'd be so upset...

Weeds in the garden must be pruned. Nastiness must be dealt with !

Rejection of comments is a logical way !

I've never had to delete one of my comments, and mostly really only have deleted duplicates or anon comments. I've been lucky enough not to have anything nasty posted, and hopefully it will stay that way. It's too bad when things go that way and people feel free to write ugliness. There's no need for it. :)
Thankfully, I've only had spam to deal with, no trolls. I've been very fortunate. However, I've just seen some REALLY hateful, ugly commenting going back and forth on another blog that I read on a regular basis. This sweet lady has very popular design blog. Right after Christmas, she did a 'holiday' post about how her family celebrates the holidays of their two different religions - Christmas and Hanukkah. Boy, did she get slammed! I felt really sorry for her.

Anyway, I have been very blessed to have really great readers and commenters, even the 'anonymous' ones. And, of course, I always try to be kind to everyone and treat them like I want to be treated. I have only deleted a couple of comments and it was only when I made gross errors in spelling or grammar and I noticed only AFTER I had already posted. I wish Blogger had a feature where you could go back and edit, maybe for even just a few minutes after you post. *sigh*

Thanks for the great post! I hope you have a great week! Oh, I'm hosting a PAY IT FORWARD Give-Away! I'd love for you to come check it out!

Blessings,

It seems like this past week had more trolls out than usual. I've seen a couple of posts on this.

I subscribe to the "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all" school of thought. Or, like television, if I don't like the content I change the channel. I don't know why people have to be hateful. And I have no patience for "Anonymous" commenting.

I've only deleted two comments in the past year-- One used really bad language to make a point (I mean realllly bad) and the other was on a rant that had nothing to do with my post.

The thing that surprises (and pleases) me is when someone leaves a nasty comment, the following commenters usually take them to task. I like how bloggers stick up for each other.

Have a great week.
