Mr Jingles

Greg bought a cat fence. It's has a base that you station where you don't want the cat to go around.

He was trying to stop Tigger from running out the door the minute it opens. So, there's the base of this thing and then a collar. I told Greg I didn't want anything to shock Tigger, because it would hurt him.

Greg told me he found this cat fence where the collar makes a static sound and it doesn't shock the cat. What the advertisement doesn't tell you is that the static sound is only level one and the rest of the levels are... shocking.

The collar has two probes that stick into the fur. We thought it was tight enough, but even on higher settings, Tigger ran by, even stood over the base, like there was nothing to it. But when Greg pushed that collar in slightly and those probes made contact, "MEOOWWWWWEEERRRREEEEEWWWWMMEEOWWEERRR"

He zapped my cat and Tigs TOOK OFF! No No No No NO, that was all I needed to hear; the collar came off! We'll have to be more mindful of the door, but Tigs won't get hurt.
We ended up going to the PetSmart store and Greg asked the manager about the product, "Does the collar give a static charge or does it shock the cat?"

The manager replied, "It shocks the cat." He saw my horrified expression and quickly added, "But it doesn't hurt the cat."

My response was, "Oh, you asked the cat that and the cat said it didn't hurt right?! Exactly how would you know if it hurts the cat?"

He continued, "We wouldn't sell something that hurt an animal. It doesn't hurt them, it just startles them."

I answered, "Really? Let me take a cattle prod to you and I'm sure it would "startle" you too!"

"Petsafe" - NOT!
Needless to say, we're returning the product. I bought bells instead, so at least Tigger can't be the stealthy escape artist that he is. Four bells are on a collar and he even has a heart-shaped tag with his name and two phone numbers in case he does get out again. Greg said, "The bells are annoying him." That may be the case, but better annoyed than Zapped!

Tigger has a new nickname ~ Mr Jingles
Greg commented, "It sounds like Christmas."

Hey! I noticed your comment on my blog post about PCOS. I tried to comment last night but there must have been a snafu.

Anywho. First things first, find a new doctor! Anyone who tells you PCOS isn't well researched is spouting off BS. There are tons of PCOS studies, books on PCOS, etc. It took me the better part of 5 years to find an OB/GYN who would help me. I walked into her office on that first visit and she said, "Have you heard of PCOS?" Boom. Diagnosis.

Secondly, if you have IR problems, get the book The Insulin Resistance Diet. It's amazingly simple and it works! I've added cardio/strength training to my diet. The weight is melting off.

A lot of cysters (women with PCOS) use Metformin to control their symptoms. You might look into that.

Take a look at soulcysters.com and soulcysters.net (the message board of the support group.) There are thousands of women with PCOS on this board. Numerous topics are covered. If you have a question/concern, you will get an answer from women who've been where you are.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Hey Aleta--thanks for your comments the past couple of days! It's been a rough week!

I'm with you--I couldn't use anything that would cause an animal pain (even if it didn't do any damage)--even Bad Cat, as annoying as he is. I love your bell idea!

Hi Maria, Thank you for the info on PCOS. I have heard various points of view about it and have friends who believe they might have this as well. And thank you for the insulin resistance book as well! I know that I'm borderline and I want to correct the problem before it becomes one.

Hi Jen, I hope things are going well for you this weekend! Yeah, even if Tigger bit my ear (like Bad Cat) to wake me up, I still couldn't shock him. Lol. I'm too much of a soft heart..

I wouldn't have recommended the cat collar. We used a bark collar (not my idea) on Percy and it was a nightmare. Not only did he still bark through the shocks--just more "subdued"--he developed raw spots where the leads? touched his skin.

Hi! Oh my gosh, poor Percy! I'm glad we didn't continue trying to use it after the first long meow, because I can only imagine Tigger getting neurotic about the collar and having bald spots. Poor Percy...
