Making Progress

My son can easily roll from back to tummy.

At the 6 month doctor appointment, I mentioned how our son is still struggling with rolling from his tummy to his back.  The doctor said, "He'll figure it out."  Which was frustrating to me, because I wanted to know how I could help my son learn to roll from tummy to back.  If you get on your tummy and figure out what to do with the arm as you roll, you'll realize the dilemma a baby faces.  What to do with the arm, do you stretch it out or tuck it in.  I showed my baby both ways and then worried that I might have confused him even more!

But he has rolled tummy to back now a few time on his own (started on September 28th, but that was with me getting on the mat and rolling with him); he's getting better.  It still frustrates him, as it's a new technique.  I clap every time he rolls to his tummy and then clap again when he rolls to his back.  He loves the clapping sound and smiles.

Don't rush him! Once he masters it, he'll be rolling around everywhere. It's kind of like a precursor to crawling for mobility. And once he's mobile... you're in trouble! ;)

It's funny how babies progress. Our second grandson struggled with his arm blocking his rolling over but then he was really early to walk and crawl out of his crib. Things can move really quickly with little ones.

Oliver still isn't really rolling over either. I take the boys in for their 6mo appointment on Friday and I will let you know if she gives me any good tips :)

What a cutie! Before you know it - he will be rolling all over and then on to the next phase! It's so exciting to be witnessing all the amazing milestones - and documenting them!

Before you know it, he will be doing it all the time - promise! No reason to get stressed, babies figure these things out when they are ready. And then, he will be rolling all over the place!
